Outreach From Baltimore Yearly Meeting: Starting Dialogues and Creating
New Relationships

BYM’s committees need new members every year. This year, we especially need new members to bring energy and new perspectives to:
● Program Committee – to plan and carry out all aspects of our annual session
● Stewardship & Finance – for faithfully translating our financial resources into our vision
● Youth Programs – to plan and attend conferences or “cons” for the Yearly Meeting’s middle and high
school folks
● Development – to support, renew and enlarge the giving activity that forms an important revenue stream
Are you someone who attends a local meeting, Annual Session, Interim Meeting, camp, Spiritual Formation, or another Quaker activity? Someone who is curious about what our committees do? Maybe you are wondering where your gifts, interests, and skills might most be needed. BYM committees shape much of the work of the Yearly Meeting, and your perspective could help shape a committee.
BYM’s Nominating Committee has care of the process of talking with and nominating F/friends who are interested in joining committees or representing BYM in another organization. Filling these positions is a community-wide process you are welcome to engage in. Let’s talk! Replying to this message won’t create an obligation for you to join a committee, but it will provide a way to share information and start a dialogue. Nominating Committee believes that new relationships and fresh dialogue will benefit our faith community.
Please email us at nominating@bym-rsf.org, and one of our members will respond.

Lectio Divina?

Have you wondered about lectio divina and how it’s done at RFM ? Basically, it’s contemplation - a chance to experience a reading of a passage, meditating upon your chosen word or phrase from the passage, feeling what comes up for you personally in your life as the passage is read, and resting in awareness of the sacredness in our lives.
Passages come from different sources. Lectio divina in Latin of course means divine reading; passages are chosen carefully. The passage is read several times; silence helps us settle enough to experience the passage in four ways:

  • Findingawordorphrasethatspeakstoyouandthatmayhavepersonalmeaninginyourlife.
  • Meditatinguponthiswordandthefeelingsyouhaveaboutitandthepassage.
  • HavinganinnerconversationwiththeDivineaboutthisandwhatitmeansinyourlife.Discoveringanew connection.
  • Restingincontemplation,intheawarenessfromtheexperienceoflisteningwithyourheart.
Lectio divina meets twice a month, every other Thursday morning on Zoom at 9am. It’s not a discussion or therapy group, but a chance to experience a connection with the Divine through a sacred passage that can come alive in silence and through worship sharing. Any one attending is welcome to just listen.
Please contact Sylvia Shurcliff with any questions.

Circles RVA Needs Allies

Have you ever wondered if you could do something to help those in poverty that would help get them out and to thrive? You can make a difference. Circles RVA does this one person at a time in a small group, but over time those small groups of one person with allies builds up as more and more become financially stable and are able to thrive.

Circles RVA has been in Richmond since 2017. It is part of Circles USA, which was developed after over 20 years of research into poverty. Their model was developed after learning that social service agencies was effective in providing long term solutions for only a small proportion of those in poverty. They saw that placing the responsibility for making goals, making them in steps that could be measured in the hands of each poor person within 18 months a huge difference could be made.

Circles RVA is starting a new cohort and looking for people in poverty to be trained to be Leaders in their journey to escape poverty and to build a better life for themselves and their loved ones. They are taught about becoming leaders, financial management and setting goals to make it possible to attain their dreams. We are also looking for Allies to join them in an intentional relationship in this journey. In this Allies are many things: someone to listen to them, to help them with problems, if possible, or to help them find help for a problem, mentor may be a small part.

Circles meets every Tuesday from 6-8pm at Grace and Holy Trinity Church, between Sacred Heart Cathedral and The Altria Theater on Laurel St. We have a dinner and then time for the Circles to get together or programming of some sort. We also get together outside of our regular times. For more information see Verna Boos or talk to Chris Olsen Vickers, a former ally. Check out www.CirclesRVA.org for more information on how you can help and to learn about previous cohorts.

Housing needed for Akeyo family

Joseph Akeyo needs a place to stay for one month with his family until
he can move into a property that’s available for him on July 1st. For
the past year, he has been living in Henrico with his two twin
children, Pamela and Joseph. His landlord has terminated Joseph’s
lease and wants the apartment vacated on May 31st. The lease was
terminated because the landlord sold the building where Joseph and his
family were living. The new buyer will move into this building on June
1st, which creates the problem of where Joseph and his family can live
for one month until July 1st.

Joseph’s children attend Godwin High School, and he would like to
remain in the West End. His wife Mary Judith and their baby will
arrive from Kenya on June 5th. He would like three rooms if that is
possible as well as access to a kitchen.

Joseph is able to pay some rent should anyone at RFM be able to
accommodate his large family. He has moved some of his belongings into
temporary storage.

Joseph can be reached at 804 971 7258. His email is josephakeyo@gmail.com
