Thinking About Race – (September 2022) Tears We Cannot Stop

This month’s column, with a passage from the book by Michael Eric Dyson, Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon To White America, 2017 and 2021 was contributed by Tronette Anochie of Sandy Spring Friends meeting. She also contributed the response.
“America is in trouble, and a lot of that trouble - perhaps most of it - has to do with race. Everywhere we turn, there is discord and division, death and destruction. When we survey the land, we see a country full of suffering that we cannot fully understand, and a history that we can no longer deny. Slavery casts a long shadow across our lives. The spoils we reaped from forcing people to work without wages and treating them with grievous inhumanity continue to haunt us in a racial gulf that seems impossible to overcome. Black and white people don't merely have different experiences; we seem to occupy different universes, with worldviews that are fatally opposed to one another.”
Response by Tronette Anochie: Where do we go from here? The BYM Working Group on Racism, the Growing Diverse Leadership Committee, the Reparations Action Committee, and STRIDE are seeking the way forward out of darkness. But everyone is needed as we move towards the Light. A Friend who likes simple prayers asks, “What is mine to do?” Each person should be asking themselves this question and then listening to the Spirit within for direction, guidance, love, and action.
This column is prepared by the BYM Working Group on Racism (WGR) and sent to the designated liaison at each local Meeting. The BYM WGR meets most months on the first Saturday, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, currently via Zoom. If you would like to attend, contact the clerk at david.etheridge@verizon.net.

Religious Education Update

The Religious Education Committee and Teachers are excited for the start of the new school year! We would like to share some of what we look forward to in the coming months.
First Sundays of the month, the children will gather in an all-ages group for a variety of activities. Wendy Wadsworth has kindly agreed to coordinate these sessions, which include nature-themed activities with Mary- Fran Hughes MacIntyre, sing-a-longs with Kelly Kennedy and Ruth Morrison, yoga with Katy Will, cooperative games with Wendy and Frances Stewart, and other moving fun. We are grateful to the Friends that have agreed to lead any of these sessions, and invite you to contact Wendy if you are willing to lead one Sunday activity in the future!
Second and Fourth Sundays, the children will meet in age-level, small group classes. We previously referred to them by school level, but our preschoolers are moving into elementary school (etc.)! One of the first activities the classes will have is naming themselves utilizing Quaker process for business. We will share those names when they have been determined.
On each Third Sunday, during Business Meeting, the Faith & Play trained teachers will lead Faith & Play for all ages. Kathryn Beaton will coordinate these sessions.
We have many returning teachers, and some new ones! Joe Ball will lead the oldest group of children, with assistance from Beth Morrison and Julia Hebner. Tera Yoder will lead the middle elementary group, with assistance from Noah Slattery and Tracy Cain. Monica Shaw will lead the preschool/kindergarten class, with
the assistance of Pearl Ball and Janet Thoroman. Marjorie Bertolino will continue to oversee the nursery, staffed by Mari Wadsworth and volunteers. We are very grateful to all of the Friends who volunteer in our nursery!
Shannon Garrett will begin clerkship of the RE committee in September, as Monica Shaw transitions to her role as lead teacher. Shannon has been a member on the RE committee since January 2021 and co-led the preschool class last school year.
We anticipate some of the RE committee members ending their terms in January, and are recruiting new members; please speak to anyone on RE or Nominating Committee if you feel led to join us.

We are also excited to share that the children will be taking an active role in recognizing the International Day of Peace in September. On the two Sundays prior, the children will be creating signs and banners, and learning a song to bring and sing during the Peace Walk at 6:30 pm on Sept 21. We are especially grateful to two talented Friends, Michael Pierce and Kelly Kennedy DiPasquale who will help channel these creative endeavors

What are Friendly Eights?

Imagine biking sections of the Capital Trail, or taking short walks in the James River Park system, or reading and discussing books that increase your understanding of critical race theory. What about learning a new craft, or visiting local museums and galleries, or watching films in languages other than English?
Many of us long to explore a new interest or hobby, and find it more engaging when we pursue that interest with f/Friends. That's what Friendly Eights are all about: sharing an interest or new pursuit with a small group of folks--usually around 8 in number—often from October to May (and sometimes year-round!).
The Care and Counsel Committee is responsible for overseeing the Friendly Eights program, and any member can answer your questions about forming a group or joining up. We always aim to offer a group called "Old Friends, New Friends" which helps orient those new to Richmond Friends Meeting and connect with a few folks who are familiar with RFM's history and Quaker practices.
Before September 11, think about a Friendly Eights topic that you'd like to organize or help facilitate. Care and Counsel will post sign-up sheets in the foyer behind our worship room early in September, and will encourage folks to sign up throughout the month. The first meetings usually happen in early October. This year, Care and Counsel will make sure to broadcast the formation of Friendly Eights via the Newslist, too. And we can help you set up using Zoom if that’s preferred.
To help us track Friendly Eight suggested topics, gauge interest, and publicize this year's options, please furnish your ideas by September 11 to Randee Humphrey or Margaret Edds.

Adult Fall Retreat, at The Clearing, Saturday, September 3rd, 9:30-3:00.

Invitation to a deeper spiritual experience:
Spiritual Formation Program, Sept. 2022-May 2023

The Baltimore Yearly Meeting Spiritual Formation Program invites its participants into a deeper spiritual experience through retreats, spiritual community in the local meeting, and individual spiritual practices.

·      Richmond Friends will carpool to the BYM Fall Spiritual Formation Retreat Sept. 9-11, 2022 at beautiful Shepherd's Spring Outdoor Ministry Center in Sharpsburg, MD.

· The Spiritual Formation Program is founded on a daily spiritual practice of each person’s choice.

· All RFM participants gather in person or virtually for 3 large group meetings: Program opening (October 2), midway (January 15), and closing (May 5) from 5 to 7pm. Those in person at RFM will end with a 6:30 potluck.

· From October 2022 through May 2023, Spiritual Formation participants build community through committing to a monthly small group (virtual or in person), or to a spiritual friendship pair. Small groups, usually 6 to 8 members, meet once a month to share spiritual journeys and support one another in a daily spiritual practice. Or a participant may form a spiritual friendship with one other person. Themes of the small groups will be:
o The Creative Process as a support group for people who grow spiritually through dance, music, photography, painting, poetry, etc. (facilitated by Cas Overton)
o Spiritual Companion Group
o “Middle Third“ Group (young adults around 25 to 45, child care provided, facilitated by Katie Will and another Friend)
o Spiritual Friendships (groups of 2)

Our first large group meeting will be held on Sunday, October 2 from 5-7pm as an introduction to the process, for organization of small groups and dyads, and for sharing spiritual journey resources.

For more about the Spiritual Formation Opening Retreat, visit the BYM site: http://www.bym-rsf.org, click “Events,” click “Spiritual Formation.”

To register, you can use either the on-line form (https://forms.gle/BJGTn4mCWfXJggtq8) or the paper form available at the meetinghouse. Please register by September 25, 2022.
