Minute in Support of a Truth and Healing Commission for Native Peoples

The Baltimore Yearly Meeting wholeheartedly supports the establishment of a national commission to seek truth
and a measure of justice for those still suffering the residual effects of public policies that created and maintained
hundreds of boarding schools for Indigenous children in the United States from 1869 through the 1960s. We
support legislation to fund such a commission. Once established we will hold the people who come before it and
the commission members in the Light, in expectation that airing of harms and traumas will lead to some healing
of long-suffered wounds. We want a commission that yields real results and changes, not a report that gathers dust on a shelf.

We applaud the fact that one intention of the commission is to prevent continued removal of Indigenous (American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian) children from their families, communities, and cultural connections by adoption and foster care agencies.

We urge research by faith groups that ran residential schools, especially the Religious Society of Friends, to
provide explicit data requested by the federal government as part of the commission’s documentation of all
boarding schools and students. We believe accountability requires robust cooperation.

RFM Use of the Clearing

The Clearing is now open for outside users as well as member and attenders. Michael Joslin is our Scheduler. Michael can be contacted directly at MichaelDJoslin@outlook.com.
Clearing Usage and Promotions wants to remind everyone to schedule meetings at the Clearing with Michael, even those that are supposed to be standing. Also, if any committee or members want to meet on the Saturday set aside for Meeting, please contact our Scheduler for that date just as you would for any other date.
Many thanks from Clearing Usage and Promotions.

Bette Gilchrist

Our dear friend Bette Gilchrist died last night at Westminster Canterbury. Bette’s daughter-in-law, Julie, and her grandson, Charlie, were holding her hands when she left us. Bette had fallen earlier in the week and sustained a brain injury. We will miss her sweet smile, her sense of calm and trust. Bette’s sons, Mark and Jay are in town and are taking care of anything that needs to happen now.

Register Now for RFM Spring Retreat May 27 – 29

Please join us for the annual Richmond Friends Meeting Spring Retreat on Memorial Day Weekend, May 27 – 29, 2022!  Our theme this year is Enlighten Up!  In last month’s announcement, we told you a little about how Barb Adams and Mary Fran Hughes McIntyre will lead us in convening a Council of All Beings.  Some of the elements that will make up this activity and experience will include:

  • Taking on the persona of another being and (perhaps) making simple masks
  • An exploration of our connections to the natural world around us through our senses, guided exploration, and small group sharing
  • Sharing the difficulties and strengths of the beings we are embodyingWe expect this to be a fun and fulfilling multigenerational activity for those (roughly) ages 6 and up

As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, after two years of virtual retreats, Spring Retreat will be back, in person, at The Clearing this year!  This means we will be planning for food preparation as well as programming.  It will be especially important for Friends to register so that we can plan for your participation.

One thing we did not mention in the May newsletter announcement is that there will be programming for younger children, but in order to plan for that, we do need to know that your children are coming!  Please be sure to register and let us know so we can plan for them as well as you.  We will also provide childcare, but we will need to know children will be at the retreat in order to arrange for adequate childcare.

There will be no fee to attend this year’s retreat, although donations are welcome.  Please use this link to fill out our very brief registration form: https://bit.ly/RFMRetreat2022.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Any questions can be directed to Ted Heck at 804-726-1056 or ted.heck@vdh.virginia.gov.
