Karen Kain

Tragic news from Karen Kain’s husband ( via Facebook)

To All Karen / Ziggy's friends and family. This is Ben, Karen's Australian Husband. I am sorry to have some tragic news to share. I have tried to contact as many people as possible in person over the last 5 hours, so my apologies for those that are getting this news via Facebook. But I wanted to post this so people have the information before there are many other posts.

As you may or may not know Karen had moved to Portland OR, to help with the care of her Mom. She and I accepted that we had to live in different countries for the past year while I finished medical training and she set up our home in the US. I was due to join her in a few weeks. We had purchased a home across the road from her mom's facility and Karen took great joy in knowing that she could bring her mom across to visit on a regular basis.

At approximately 8.30pm last night there was a tragic hit and run accident as Karen and her mom were crossing the road. Her mom is injured but in a stable condition, but Karen took the full force of the impact and we are told was killed instantly. Obviously my heart is shattered and I have no words or headspace to pay fitting tribute to her here and now, She made a huge difference to everyone she crossed paths with, her enormous heart and boundless compassion for others, her intellect and passion and integrity enriched everyone's lives who were lucky enough to come into the brilliance of her orbit, none more so than me.

There will of course be a celebration of her life in due course but first I will need to get myself across to the US and I look forward to seeing all those I have met already and meeting others for the first time and sharing your memories of her. In the mean time, please reach out to each other and remember her and share stories.
With love to you all, Ben x

Wayne W. Finegar II Named New Executive Director of Quaker House

The Board of Directors of Quaker House is pleased to announce the appointment of Wayne W. Finegar II to the position of Executive Director, effective March 1, 2022

Mr. Finegar graduated from Swarthmore College in 1989 with a BA in Philosophy and received a JD degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1993. After 9 years of practicing plaintiff's personal injury law, he became the at-home parent for his three sons. In 2009 he joined the staff of Baltimore Yearly Meeting, eventually serving as the Associate General Secretary and then the Acting General Secretary.

He looks forward to living in Fayetteville and helping our service members who are injured and/or mistreated by our country's warfare. He believes “that the testimony of peace requires seeking to end all forms of violence and that this work includes supporting every victim of that violence."

Mr. Finegar will:

• Serve as the organization’s primary community builder, spokesperson, and administrator

• Work with the board and staff to construct and execute a strategic plan to expand the Quaker House mission in North Carolina and nationally.

• Attend and speak at gatherings such as monthly, quarterly, and yearly meetings of the Religious Society of Friends, other faith communities, and local partner organizations.

• Articulate the Quaker House mission in an inspiring way to internal and external constituencies.

• Develop and supervise peace witness programs—currently Counseling, Truth in Recruiting, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Moral Injury in the Military, and coordinate with the GI Rights Network.

• Engage in the local community, building relationships and partnerships that advance the mission

Mr. Finegar succeeds Kindra Bradley, who has served as Executive Director since 2017.

“Kindra was Executive Director of Quaker House when I became a board member,” said Patricia Stansbury, clerk of the Quaker House Board. “Her calm leadership and informed passion were the face of our mission for me. Her adoption and adaptation of virtual technology connected us so we could continue our work. Quaker House is in good shape for this transition because of Kindra‘s focus and supportive spirit.”

During Kindra’s tenure, the work of Quaker House encompassed an active family counseling program for survivors of domestic abuse, and supported the nationwide GI Rights Hotline, a service which Quaker House helped found in 1994. She also took part in hearings for the Congressionally chartered National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service, which explored an expansion of the Selective Service System. Kindra paid special attention to maintaining the rights of conscientious objectors and advocated ending the system for all rather than requiring the registration of women. This was in addition to organizing numerous peaceful antiwar protests and leading Quaker House in supporting local Black Lives Matter and police oversight activism. The board thanks Kindra for her exceptional service and wishes her well in her next endeavor.

Who we are: For over 50 years Quaker House has operated in Fayetteville, NC, home of Ft. Bragg, to manifest the Friends’ Peace Testimony in a military city.

What we do: Quaker House provides counseling and support to service members who are questioning their role in the military; educates them, their families, and the public about military issues; and advocates for a more peaceful world.

Add a Little Art to Your Life

Friend Michael Pierce has recently organized and curated several art exhibitions for his students and that he thought some of you might also like to see. Several of these shows include Friends or have connections to Friends that you may know. You can contact Michael at mapierce2001@comcast.net if you’d like to have him meet you at any of the following venues for a personal tour:
Stream of Consciousness – Artwork by Gerry Bannan and Genesis Chapman: This exhibit is on view in the Tyler Gallery on the Midlothian Campus of John Tyler Community College where Michael teaches studio classes in the Fine Arts. You can see this show now through March 11, 2022. Both Gerry and Genesis are Virginia-based artists, and their monumental watercolor and ink paintings highlight their shared appreciation of nature and the environment. Michael curated this exhibit so that his
students could get a chance to see this amazing world class artwork right on campus. Some of you may know Genesis’s family, who have connections to Roanoke Quaker meeting. The Tyler Gallery is in Room E107, Eliades Hall, JTCC, 800 Charter Colony Parkway, Midlothian, VA 23114 and is open to the public M – Th, 11:00am – 3:00pm. (A link to a video artist talk will be forthcoming.)
Theme & Variations – We Thought COVID Would Be Over By Now: This exhibit is on view at CVA / U-Turn Inc. on Maywill Street in Richmond,
now through May 2022. This show includes bodies of work created by Michael’s Fall 2021 JTCC advanced watercolor students. Participating artists include Friends Roni Kingsley, Sallie Rugg, and Janet Scagnelli, amongst others. This satellite show of Artspace Gallery is housed in the CVA / U-Turn Inc. facility at 2101 Maywill Street, Richmond, VA 23230, and exhibit hours are Tu – Sun, Noon – 4:00pm. An in-person Reception for the Artists is scheduled for 6:00pm – 8:00pm, Friday, March 4, 2022, and is free and open to the public. (A link to a video artist talk will be forthcoming.)
Theme & Variations - Highlights from the COVID Times: This exhibit will be on view at the Downtown Branch of the Richmond Public Library from March 4 – March 30, 2022. This show includes paintings created in the middle of the pandemic by Michael’s Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 JTCC advanced watercolor students. The Downtown Branch of the Richmond Public Library is located at 101 East Franklin Street, Richmond, VA 23219. Hours are M – F 10:00am – 5:00pm and Sat 10:00am – 5:00pm. A First Friday, Opening Reception for the Artists is scheduled for 6:30pm – 9:00pm, March 4, 2022.
You had best be wary…: This is a show of Michael’s artwork that will be on view at Patrick Henry Community
College in Martinsville from March 1 – Mid-April 2022. This exhibit includes work that Michael made during the pandemic. Some of it, he made while in a quickly aborted stay in an artist residency in Paris at the very beginning of the pandemic; these pieces were based on images of rabbits and foxes in the Unicorn Tapestries in the Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris. For me, the rabbit is an obvious stand-in for us humans during the pandemic, and the fox represents the virus. There are also blurry watercolor images of rubber gloves inspired by Chaucer’s Pardoner’s Tale; that’s also where the title of this exhibition comes from. Michael is asking: How do we protect ourselves in these times (or any times) and how careful do we need to be? The gallery is free and open to the public on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Walker Fine Arts Building, 645 Patriot Avenue, Martinsville, VA 24112.
