Black Quaker Leaders series

Beginning on Feb 12, 2022, continuing every other Saturday, until April 9, 2022,  the American Friends Service Committee  will offer a  films series, Black Quaker Lives Matter.    Each film will focus on an individual Quaker of Color who has contributed, mostly unacknowledged, to the life of our Faith and to the larger world.

The first session on Feb 12, departs from the usual format, featuring a  dialogue between Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge and Palestinian Friend and AFSC General Secretary Joyce Ajlouny.   These two women are the first women of color to lead Quaker transnational organizations.  Remaining sessions will include screening of a film after which Dr. Harold Weaver, the director of Black Quaker Project, will facilitate a discussion.

If you wish to participate please go to the following website to learn more and register: https://www.theblackquakerproject.org/black-quaker-lives-matter-film-festival

FCNL

Friends Committee for National Legislation (FCNL), the Quaker organization that advocates on Capital Hill for legislation that reflects our testimonies, is reaching out to Meetings across the country in order to solicit input regarding which national issues Friends see as the most urgent for the 118th Congress, which convenes in January, 2023. In order for Richmond Friends Meeting to participate in this Spirit-led discernment process, please email Barbara Pedrotty by February 24th the issue/s you would like FCNL to focus on. Peace and Social Concerns will develop a plan, given the restraints of the pandemic, to combine and coalesce those suggestions into a draft of the (maximum) seven most urgent legislative issues for RFM. We will present the draft at Meeting for Business in March, in the hope of forwarding RFM's legislative priorities to FCNL by their deadline of April 12th, 2022.

FCNL suggests issues be grouped into one of the four categories, below, as noted in the brochure “The World We Seek” (available at fcnl.org) which outlines the foundational policies from which legislative priorities can be discerned. Therefore, please indicate in which category you believe your particular issue/s belong:

I. We Seek a World Free of War and the Threat of War

II. We Seek a Society with Equity and Justice for All

III. We Seek A Community Where Every Person’s Potential May Be Fulfilled

IV. We Seek an Earth Restored

Given the challenging times we live in, how are we as Friends called to influence our government today? What issues should be the focus for FCNL’s advocacy efforts? Where is the Spirit leading us?

Please send your suggestions to Barbara Pedrotty at gracepeds@yahoo.com by 2/24/22

New Friendly Eight Groups

Healing Prayer, Pearl Ball convenor
Pearl Ball feels a calling to initiate a Healing Prayer group for members and attenders of Richmond Friends Meeting. RFM has held such meetings in the past, and Pearl feels that the time is right to revive a focused practice. She suggests that the meetings would be held virtually on Thursday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m, beginning on February 17. They will offer a time to pray together and hold in the Light persons in need of support.
If you wish to participate, please contact Pearl at pearlsatarawala@gmail.com or 973-650-9680.
If you are unable to participate in a given session, Pearl asks you to contact her if there is someone you would like held in the light.
Pearl suggests reading Pendle Hill pamphlet #382, "Holding One Another in the Light." Copies will be provided to the RFM library.

Humankind Book Group, convenors Don Miller and Arthur Shurcliff
Don and Arthur describe Humankind by historian and thinker Rutger Bregman as "an amazingly interesting read, a page-turner, inspirational, and potentially a foundational philosophy for societal change." They will host a kickoff, planning-only meeting on Sunday, March 13, at 7:30 pm on Zoom. It will last no more than one hour. A link will be distributed a few days ahead of time.
If you are interested, contact either Don (donmiller123@gmail.com, 804-387-1049) or Arthur (ashurcliff@icloud.com, 804-918-8074).
Quick synopsis: Rutger Bregman's premise is that our prevalent view of humanity is that, without the reining-in influence of civilization, people tend toward selfish, anti-social behavior. In the extreme, think "Lord of the Flies." But he presents persuasive evidence and many examples demonstrating that this pessimistic view of human nature is incorrect. Rather, people's natural inclination is to want to pull together and support each other as a community. (This aligns with our emphasis on honoring the light within each person.)
The implications are vast. Our institutions tend to assume the former view, are designed accordingly, and bring out the worst in us. Bregman gives many examples - our political systems, our prisons, our schools, etc. - and also cites contrary examples, where institutions that are designed to develop our humanity have been successful. --

Meetings for Worship: January- February

Ministry and Worship Committee announces that meeting for worship on Sundays will be conducted virtually, on Zoom, for the months of January and February, 2022. We will not hold early (9:30) worship during this period. The committee will meet in February and decide whether Zoom-only worship needs to be extended for the following month; this will likely be a month-by-month decision. Our decisions will be guided by the VDH (Virginia Department of Health) regarding how Covid 19 is doing in our area. All of us want to be back in person, with blended meetings, as soon as it is safe to do so.

See you at Meeting.

Barbara Myers, clerk of Ministry and Worship
