The Clearing

he Clearing Usage and Promotions Committee would like to remind everyone in Meeting that The Clearing is available to members and attenders free of any donation request. Our lovely retreat center offers different levels of camping: sites to pitch a tent, the Adirondack shelter for some protection from the elements, and large and small sleeping cabins. For those who want even more shelter there is the Lodge, with a kitchen and bathrooms close at hand.
If anyone–member, attender or committee–wants to use The Clearing, please make a reservation with The Clearing Scheduler, Michael Joslin, through “The Clearing” section on the RFM website.
Remember that the first weekend of every month is reserved for our RFM community. This means that there is no outside group competition on first Saturdays, but anyone reserving the entire weekend would be sharing the site with those attending Meeting for Worship there on first Sunday mornings. Please remember that you need to make a reservation for these days, too.
Note that there will be no meetings for worship at The Clearing in December, January, or February during the cold-weather season.

RFM Use of the Clearing

The Clearing is now open for outside users as well as member and attenders. Michael Joslin is our Scheduler. Michael can be contacted directly at MichaelDJoslin@outlook.com.
Clearing Usage and Promotions wants to remind everyone to schedule meetings at the Clearing with Michael, even those that are supposed to be standing. Also, if any committee or members want to meet on the Saturday set aside for Meeting, please contact our Scheduler for that date just as you would for any other date.
Many thanks from Clearing Usage and Promotions.

Clearing Work Days

The Clearing Building & Grounds Committee invites Richmond Meeting members to join us for three days this spring, preparing the Clearing for the 2020 season and our annual RFM Spring Retreat.  This is a great opportunity to spend some time getting to know folks in the Meeting and getting to know The Clearing.  Please mark your calendars and join us if you’re able!  The dates are:
Each workday will start at 9:00 am and go to about 4:00 pm (give or take an hour), depending on what jobs we have to get done that day.
Some of the things we will be working on include clearing campsites and trails, replacing some signage around the property, sweeping out the Pavilion (floors, cabinets, cobwebs on the ceiling, etc.) and replacing the tablecloths on the Pavillion tables, and (with a little luck that it all comes together!) assembling some new picnic tables outside of the Lodge to replace the older ones that are falling apart.
Stuff you should consider bringing:
  • Your lunch!  And maybe some snacks and/or any beverage you want beyond the water that is available at The Clearing
  • Clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, wear layers that you can put on or take off depending on the temperature.
  • Sturdy shoes or boots
  • A hat
  • Work gloves
  • Bug spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Tools, if you have them, although the Clearing Buildings & Grounds Committee members will bring our extra tools to share.  The following might be useful: rakes, clippers, loppers or shears for trimming vegetation, a hammer, and tools for digging up roots (very useful for preventing the vegetation from growing back in the campsites and trails as quickly).
Anyone with questions is welcome to call me, Ted Heck (Clerk of the Clearing Builds & Grounds Committee) with questions, at 804-726-1056.

RPEC Retreat

Take a journey of peace with the Richmond Peace Education Center (RPEC) on May 2nd at The Clearing, our 88-acre wooded retreat in Amelia County less than an hour drive from Richmond. The day starts at 10:00 AM with a guided meditation and silent circuit walk in the forest. Lunch will be provided by RFM’s Peace and Social Concerns Committee, followed by some time for wandering, rest, and relaxation. Finally, a “Forest Bathing” spiritual exercise with an accredited guide and a gentle yoga session on the grassed Clearing, customized to your level (please bring your own mat). The day wraps up with coffee, tea, and fellowship, wrapping up before 5PM. Visit the Clearing Website here for more information here, or visit: https://testsite.richmondfriends.org/theclearing/.

Clearing Workday

The Clearing Building & Grounds Committee is having a Clearing Workday on Saturday, March 30. Everyone is invited to join us out at The Clearing starting at 9:30 am. Bring a lunch, work gloves, clothes appropriate for working outdoors, sunblock, bug repellent, a hat, and/or whatever else will help to sustain you for the day. Tools are welcome as well, especially clippers, hand saws, and other implements that might be useful for clearing trails and campsites. You may want to label your items so they are easy to keep track of.

The address is 14006 Genito Rd, Amelia Court House, VA 23002, which now works quite well in Google Maps!
