“Racial exclusion from the mainstream economy, [Malcolm] later reasoned, meant that ‘almost everyone in Harlem needed some kind of hustle to survive, and needed to stay high in some way to forget what they had to do to survive …. In one sense, we were huddled in there, bonded together in seeking security and warmth, and comfort from each other, and we didn’t know it. All of us—who might have probed space, or cured cancer, or built industries—were, instead, black victims of the white man’s America social system.’ ” (p. 180)

Adult Spiritual Education Announcements

Adult Spiritual Education will have our first Drop in Quaker Question Discussion on December 3rd during the coffee hour. After getting your coffee and greeting others, join us in an upstairs Classroom. This month we will share about “How do we live out the Quaker Testimony of Simplicity during the holidays?”

We will hold the second of two sessions on the Pendle Hill pamphlet, "Reclaiming the Transcendent. God in Process" by Thomas Gates. It will be hybrid: available on Zoom and in person in the Worship Room.
Saturday, November 11, 9:30 to 11 am - The God/Gods You Don't Believe In. Pages 9 to 16.

Pre-reading is strongly encouraged so you may more deeply benefit from the ideas presented and would love you to share your seasoned thoughts and reflections. Of course, we warmly welcome you whether you have read the pamphlet or not. We will have extra pamphlets available at the sessions, so if you're curious you'll be able to participate.

Updating Photo Board

Care and Counsel is updating the photo board. If you have a recent photo of yourself and/or family no larger than 4 1⁄4” please give it to Charlotte Davenport or Sallie Rugg. Please write names in pencil on the back of your picture. If you would like to be photographed, please contact Sallie Rugg. Previous photos will be part of a collage in the library unless you want them back.

Friends General Conference–More than just The Gathering

The Friends General Conference is familiar to us as the group that puts on our annual Gathering but they do so much more. They offer virtual activities on many topics for all ages. Currently, there are workshops for white friends confronting racism and worship sharing for people of color. They also offer Spiritual E-retreats, there is one coming up soon. All of these events are either low cost or free.
Are you curious about what is going on in the wider Quaker community? The FGC website provides links to other Quaker organizations such as AFSC, FCNL, The Black Quaker Project and Friends Peace Teams just to mention a few. Let’s not forget books! FGC has an expansive online bookstore, both fiction and non-fiction. Yes, Quakers write murder mysteries.

Aging in Community Support Group

The “Aging in Community Support Group” is open to members and attenders of retirement age.
From our Mission Statement “We want to help each other. We want to be a source of practical, emotional, and spiritual support to help each other as we age in community.” Membership is open to retirement age members and attenders of Richmond Friends Meeting. Membership is open to non-Quaker spouses.
The aging group has one yearly meeting in September and functions autonomously under the care of Care & Counsel. For more information about the group or if you are interested in joining us, contact the current clerk, Carolyn Moul.
